Busy Weekend Ahead for Cycling in Northeast Ohio

The weekend of Friday, September 14th thru Sunday, September 16th will provide a wide variety of activities in the Cleveland area for bike racing.  From race official’s clinic to track racing to cyclocross racing, here is a quick list of the day by day schedule:

Friday, September 14, 2012

USA Cycling Official’s Clinic

This is the introductory level clinic for those who wish to become a USA Cycling race official.  The Midwest Regional Coordinator, Larry Martin, will be the instructor for this clinic.  Though this clinic will have a strong focus on track racing and track events, you will learn about officiating all types of bike races.  Here is a brief summary of the clinic:

This is an introduction to officiating with a focus on track racing and officiating track events. There will be a follow up of Velodrome racing on Saturday at the New Cleveland Velodrome. There is a lecture followed by an open book test of 100 questions where 70% or better is passing. Cost for new officials is $35.00 payable upon completion of the test. Visa, Mastercard, check or cash is accepted. Previously licensed officials cost is $60.

You can register for the clinic on the USA Cycling website or e-mail Brett Davis at info@clevelandvelodrome.org to confirm your attendance.

We are always in need of more race officials, and we have a serious shortage of motorefs in most of the state.  If you have any interest in becoming a race official or motoref, you should seriously consider taking this clinic.  Motorefs will need to take an additional class which will be scheduled at a later date but still need to become a USA Cycling licensed race official first.

Ohio State Track Championship

It didn’t take long after completion of the new Cleveland Velodrome for them to put on a big event.  The day will consist of time trials, pursuits and a Team Sprint crowning a handful of State Championships.  Grab your track bike (no gears or freewheels allowed), and hit the boards for a fun day of track racing, OR just come out and watch.

Registration is available at USA Cycling.

Wendy Park Cyclocross

It’s the second stop in the Northeast Ohio Cyclocross Series (NEOCX), and the series has already started off on the muddy foot.  A late morning downpour turned the usually soggy Cascade Park course into a mudfest last weekend.  What will Wendy Park and Team Spin bring to the table?

Here is a link to the Race Flyer.  Registration is day of event only.

Harbin Park Short Track MTB Race

Since many people in the area are “new” to MTB Racing through USA Cycling, here is an article I wrote in February 2012 explaining the licensing involved with USAC-MTB Events.

Race Course

The course is a good variety of double tracks and single tracks which are all rideable.  The opening section is a wide open rolling field that turns you into the first double track section.  These two sections should determine the pecking order before dumping the riders into the single section consisting of twists, turns and rolling terrain.  Upon exiting the single track, you’ll enter the second double track section which is very rough.  The initial part is slightly downhill before giving your a couple of small climbs.  The final section of the course brings you back into open fields where you will be faced with the wall up to the finish.  Luckily, we are being nice and setting it up as an Alp d’Huez climb instead of straight up to the finish line.  This will help you save your lungs for the next 5 attempts you may need to make around the course.

For those who are familiar with the trails at Harbin Park, here is the course that we plan to use:

From the sled hill shelter, head east.  Head north on the double track and turn (left) into the start of the Orange Trail single track.  When the single track dumps you into the open field near the pavilion, make the 180 left onto the other double track section to return to the sled hill.  Continue across the small field and across the dip through the trees before starting up the climb.  Instead of making everyone go straight up the hill, we will most likely have you crisscross your way up to keep the racing close.  (Remember, you will have to do that climb multiple times during your 20/30 minute race.)  Once at the top, turn left and repeat until you are told you are done.

Here is a link to the MapMyRide of the course.  We will also work on putting together a PDF of the regular trail map outlining the actually race course we will use.

State Time Trial Championship Start Times

1

For those participating in the State Time Trail Championship this weekend, here are the start times.  Remember that you MUST be checked in at registration by 8:30 am for the morning races and 12:30 pm for the afternoon races regardless of what time your race is.  Riders will be able to use the same bib number for both the morning and afternoon races.

COURSE MAP

The juniors and masters of Ohio will converge in the southwestern most corner of Ohio for the 2012 Road Race Championship.  The Harrison’s Tomb course made popular by the 2011 Regional Masters Championship and the 2012 Ohio Spring Race Series will be the course in use.  The main difference will be that the riders will start from the Cleves Time Trial start to give them 10 miles of flat to rolling terrain to get settled in before hitting the climb.  The 10-12 year old juniors will only have to do the 10.2 miles with no significant climbs.

Registration and results are being managed by BigDaveSports.

Midwest Regional Masters Championship CANCELLED

2

It is with great regret that we must announce the cancellation of this year’s Midwest Regional Masters Championship.  We had high hopes for a big and better set of events this year, but unfortunately time is not on our side.  After a very busy Winter and Spring, we are behind on the planning process with very little relief in sight.  With less than 2 months until the schedule dates of July 21st and 22nd, there are still many things that need to be, most of which should have been completed months ago.  We apologize for any heartache and disappointment this has caused as we know many were looking forward to this year’s events.  We, at BigDaveSports strive to put on quality events, and if we can’t make that happen, we’d rather not waste everyone’s time and/or disappoint anyone with a less than satisfactory racing experience.

Sincerely,

David “BigDave” Riemenschneider

This is a great low-key event on a simple, 2 turn, 1-mile flat loop in an office park.  If you are looking to get your feet wet in crit racing or just want to fine tune your skills early in the season, this race is a must do.

COURSE MAP

Since online registration is not being offered for this event, we at BigDaveSports have put together this standard USA Cycling Release Form that allows you to enter all of your information before printing it.  This will allow you to have a crisp and legible waiver to hand to them at registration on race day.  Here is how it works:

  1. Open the PDF file,
  2. Select the Race Category you are entering,
  3. Fill in the remaining information by typing it in the appropriate boxes,
  4. Print it,
  5. Sign it,
  6. Hand it to registration with your money.
If you don’t want to go through all of that, then just fill out a blank waiver by hand at the race while all of your competition is busy warming up.
