Caesar Creek MTB Race is CANCELED!

Due to poor trail conditions caused by a sever storm about a month ago, we will not be able to have the course ready in time for next weekend’s Mountain Bike State Championship at Caesar Creek.  The storm laid down about 60+ trees along the trails.  A handful of people have been working numerous hours, sometimes daily, trying to clear the trails in time for the August 13th race.  Despite making quite a lot of progress, there is still a lot left to clear, and there just isn’t enough time to get it all done to have a safe race.  The work that has been done is greatly appreciated and we hope that work will continue to be done until the entire trail system in Caesar Creek is open again for recreational riding.  Many thanks go out to those who have been working on these trails.

We are entertaining the idea of rescheduling the race.  HOWEVER, we had a difficult enough time finding a date to hold the event to begin with, so looking for an alternate date will be a steep mountain to climb.  There aren’t many weekends left before we get into Cyclocross season, and many MTB-ers also race CX.

There is a rumor that Full Service Racing may be looking to do a repeat of either the Harbin Park Race or Hueston Woods Race to fill the vacant spot in the weekend as well as the vacant spot in the CORA Series.

We apologize for any inconvenience or heartbreak this may have caused you and hope that you understand the situation we are in.

BDS Receives Anonymous Donation to Support Junior’s Races

BigDaveSports recently received a gracious anonymous donation to be used for providing and developing racing opportunities for juniors in our area.  BigDaveSports has already been working to provide more racing opportunities for juniors, but this will help offset some of the costs involved as well as provide funds to be able to encourage more juniors to participate.  Here are some of the ways BigDaveSports plans to use these funds:

  1. A Junior’s Category has already been added to the OSRS #10 Series Finale in Georgetown, OH.  Now, with collaboration of Dino’s Neighborhood Grill, all juniors (entering the juniors category) will receive a FREE meal after the race.
  2. At the 2011 Ohio Juniors & Masters State Road Race Championship, again with collaboration from Dino’s Neighborhood Grill, all junior participants will receive a FREE meal after the race.
  3. For the Devou Park Summer Race Series, all juniors will race for FREE.  That’s right, entry fees waived for the juniors’ categories!  This will include the Devou Hill Climb Time Trial.
  4. The last event that BigDaveSports has on the schedule for juniors is the Caesar Creek MTB Race.  This event is not only the USAC-MTB State Championship for Ohio, but is also part of the Alison Dunlap Junior Series-Mountain Bike (ADJ-MTB).  As part of the ADJ-MTB program, this event offers juniors’ categories from U10 up to the standard 15-18 age brackets.  Currently, none of the funds have been allocated to this event, but entry fees are only $10 and it is worth mentioning as it has a strong push for junior racing.  Additional benefits for juniors may be added at a later date as we get closer to the race.

We greatly appreciate this unsolicited donation and hope that the outcome from it is an improvement in juniors racing in Ohio!

Newly Designed, FASTER AND Shorter Course

Caesar’s 2011 race course is fast, usually dry singletrack, with countless small climbs and descents.  Some descents are steep and moderately technical.  One or two good creek crossings, so remember your wet lube.  Start begins with 1/4 mile of slightly uphill pavement.  There is a 1.1 mile section of pavement in the middle of the loop.  The rest is all singletrack.

After the pre-race meeting at 11:45am in Hatton-Lukens Park, all riders will roll down to the starting line at the end of Harveysburg Rd by the lake.  Pro/Expert will roll off the line first at noon.  The rest of the Divisions will roll off every few minutes. The course will run clockwise for 2011.

USA Cycling Mountain Bike (USAC-MTB) State Championship

  • The top 15 riders from each category and age group (regardless of state of residency) will be eligible to compete at the next USAC-MTB National Championship of the same discipline.

Alison Dunlap Junior Series-Mountain Bike (ADJ-MTB)

The top 5 riders  in the following categories/age groups will be extended USAC Development Camp invitations to be used for 2011 or 2012 camps:

  • Cat 1: 15-16 Men
  • Cat 1: 17-18 Men
  • Cat 1: 15-16 Women
  • Cat 1: 17-18 Women

Category 2 riders with a racing age of 15-18 may be considered for USAC Development Camps based on race resume/results.

Kentucky Points Series

  • Top 10 finishers for each age and race class will receive points for each race completed.
  • Riders that DNF will be awarded 1 point.
  • Top 7 points results will be added for series final standings.
  • In the event of a tie, the tie breaker will be determined by the last race the two tied racers competed against one another.
Place 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th DNF
Points 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 1

CORA Series

  • The CORA Series Points Grid is available on their website.
  • The CORA Series is composed of existing races already established in and around the Cincinnati area.
  • $2 for each registered rider at this race will go back to CORA to help support trail maintenance and trail advocacy.

Additional USA Cycling MTB Licensing Information

  • USA Cycling only requires Pro and Category 1 riders to hold a USAC-MTB annual license.  Category 2 and Category 3 riders do not need a license and can self-categorize themselves.  One-day licenses are at the discretion of the promoter with the promoter keeping any additional funds charged for a one-day license or non-licensed rider.  This promoter says, “Shut up and ride!” and will not be charging anything extra for non-licensed riders.
  • So why have an annual license if you’re a Category 2 or Category 3 rider (and don’t expect to be competing for State Championship medals)?  As you should expect more USA sanctioned MTB races to appear in the area, holding an annual license will help with upgrading down the road.  Afterall, we all think we are Cat 1/Expert or Pro riders.

BDS to Partner With Full Service Racing on MTB Events

BigDaveSports has proven to be a major player in the road racing scene over the past year.  New kid, Philip Hurst of Full Service Racing, is entering the mountain biking scene with the same enthusiasm and goals with that discipline as BDS had in the road scene 2 years ago.  Instead of waiting on the learning curve for Full Service Racing to reinvent the wheel, BigDaveSports will be working with Philip and his company on a couple of MTB events in 2011.

Full Service Racing is enhancing the MTB scene with it’s Time Trial Series.  The Hueston Woods Riding Dirty Time Trials debuted in fall 2010 with much success and praise.  Now we have the Riding Dirty Winter Time Trials in Harbin Park that are bringing out the dirt lovers in droves even in deep snow and temperatures as low as 5 degrees at the start of the first rider on the Saturday, January 22nd event.

The big project the two will work on is the 2011 Caesar Creek Mountain Bike Race.  There are two big things being planned for this event.  First, it is being planned as the USAC-MTB State Championship for Ohio.  This will allow riders to qualify to participate in the USAC-MTB National Championships.  The other big thing will be to get the event listed as part of the Alison Dunlap Junior Mountain Bike Series (ADJ-MTB).  This not only encourages juniors to participate in mountain biking, but the top finishers may be invited to a National Development Camp.  The tentative date for this event is Saturday, August 20, 2011.  More details will follow.

If you’ve never raced before, this is a great way to get started. The course is a relatively easy 4.25 miles with a couple steep climbs and screaming descents. Each rider chooses 1, or 2 laps. Riders are released in 30 second intervals. You race against the clock and compare your progress week to week and with other riders. Results/Stats are posted weekly.

This is a laid-back event. There will be nothing but a good time to be had. The start and finish will be at the shelter by the parking lot , which has a toasty fireplace with plenty of parking and room to warm up. Come get dirty and have some fun!
